IIPM PUBLICATION
In a contemporary business milieu where maverick thought leaders across the globe wax eloquent on the finer nuances of good governance and corporate strategy aimed towards muscling organisations ahead of the glorified threat of cutthroat competition, emerges an endeavour that delves into the soul of an epic authored by an individual considered by many India’s original kingmaker and strategist, Chanakya (also known as Kautilya). While Sun Tzu, world-renowned battle strategist from China, was penning down his beliefs in The Art of War – widely perceived as the world’s oldest military dissertation – Chanakya, not far away, was absorbed in assimilating his insights in a volume termed the Arthashastra, which for centuries went on to personify his prudence in dealing with complexities that had existed in polity, governance and politics at the time of the Maurya reign in India.
Hailed for the pivotal component he proved in crafting the foundations of one of India’s greatest empires, and his proximity with Chandragupta Maurya – the very first sovereign of the dynasty – Kautilya essayed a stellar role in guiding his king and skilfully mentoring him in establishing the might of the Maurya Empire. So much so that the very mention of the name Kautilya, for centuries, has been synonymous with someone who is a shrewd philosopher and visionary.
