One can only imagine how these 55 will be passed. One reason for this mass of non-work is ‘bickering’. As always, the Treasury benches and the Opposition are readying to bait the other. Ruckus is already growing on the weak-kneed release of terrorists in exchange for Indian hostages at Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 1999. The then External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh’s conduct in Kandahar, promises to be a topic of raucous name-calling, especially with his belated assertion that there was a “mole” in the Narasimha Rao government (a statement challenged by the current PM Manmohan Singh). There will be many more of such niggles, which will keep some important legislation on hold – like the Seed Bill, the Pension Bill, the Prevention of Child Marriages Bill and the Women’s Reservation Bill.

“Often, people say MPs are wasting money. It is only the middle-class and the political class that is concerned about money being spent on Parliament and no work being done,” snaps D. Raja, Secretary, Communist Party of India. What Raja is alluding to could be the second reason for piling bills: Lobbying. Interested parties push for legislation to suit their interests. Some MPs, therefore, see no harm in taking time to pass bills. One bill is on hold since 1987, the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill. Then there’s the Food Safety and Standards Bill that proposes to establish a Food Safety & Standards Authority for setting and monitoring nutritional & chemical- content standards in local & imported food items. In the West, for instance, these would be issues to deal with haste.

FALLEN SUPER HEROES

He was called the caped crusader, and it was a dreadingly dark & rainy night when he failed... when he failed to do the simplest of things expected of him; he couldn’t save them; not one; this superhero had failed, and miserably so... and sadly, just because the reality of it all was that he, despite all his promises to the world, could never ever fly. In fact, Batman was never born to fly!!!

But the situation would not have been much different if he could have fl own; as even other superheroes, flying or otherwise, have failed miserably in the Indian aviation space. And the leading laurel could have easily gone to our Dubai grown papa crusader, Naresh-‘ I hate you Sahara’-Goyal, who just about missed the most brilliant chance of becoming the man who achieved the biggest disaster in the history of Indian aviation! B&E had cried itself hoarse (refer issues from January 27, 2006, onwards) warning him about his miscalculation (coupled with his willingness to part with Rs.23 billion) in taking over the virtually zero-asset Air Sahara.

Yes, when we were all so euphoric over the truthdefying growth in traffic across the Indian skies, the recent Jet-Sahara divorce serves as a blinding indication that consolidation at the moment is just a mirage, since the sector is still in its infancy. So what led to this euphoria & why exactly is the Indian aviation dream going sour?

It’s a 2nd century Roman marble relief artwork from the era before Christ. Being auctioned by Christie's, it is believed to be a part of a Mithraic temple. Mithraeum is a mysterious religion that was very popular between the 1st century and 5th century till the Roman emperor Theodosian The Great banned it attributing to certain pagan rites practiced by the cult. This particular marble relief represents the killing of a sacred bull, though there are accounts that show that this killing was actually an emblematic depiction of constellation Perseus. Curious? When man’s best friend was better than ever
Travel and time. Apart from the fact that the former requires the luxury of the latter, there is more in common. They both beget experience – a very handy virtue. And thus, when this synchronous scheme called time-travelling lands me at an outwardly ordinary looking station in Tokyo, I figured that there was some profundity waiting to shine through the plebeian; as if one of life’s little lessons looking to jump out of the dog-eared pages of history. How right was I…

On the spring evening of April 21 in 1934, my attention was drawn to a crowded commotion at the Shibuya Station, around what looked like an unveiling of a statue of a… dog?! Indeed it was; as I drew closer, there was the sculptor and next to him, the ‘hero’ – an adorably-large Akita dog. Stuck behind an equallyintrigued gentleman, his investigations revealed the tale of Chuken Hachiko (Loyal Dog Hachiko).


With Prof. Hidesaburo Ueno since one year of age, Hachi ko would escort his master daily to the station to see him off for work, and be back in the afternoons to receive him. But come one sundown, the professor didn’t come back, having suffered a fatal stroke at his place of work. Hachi, however, had kept up with his afternoon vigil routine, despite having been sent away to his new owners. “Poor dog… so, how many days now?” asked the sympathiser. Straining to be heard above the waning whistle of a passing train, the other replied, “Ten years…”

To say I was moved would be petty. Instead of turning to behold the paragon of fealty – in bronze and in flesh – I was suddenly looking earthwards, giddy with overwhelming disbelief and faith. And then towards Hachi ko. Staring back at a fawning assembly, unmindful of the mass adulation around him, Hachi’s eyes still seemed to be scouting for a familiar face; one he’d happily hop back home with. Dogs and loyalty, of course… but 10 years?! Have you known love of a greater kind… unconditional and unbroken – exactly how this emotion was first conceived by the Power Supreme. It’s time the world went to the dog(s)...

When the ‘Comeback Kid’ squashed Bob Dole, it was 60 years since a Democrat won a second successive term. Clinton rode the economic boom of his first-term, and by the time he stepped down in 2001, the US had a gross national product of $10,000 billion, a quarter of the world’s economic output.

Though he became only the second US president to face impeachment for perjury, over the Monica Lewinsky affair, Clinton unbelievably stayed afloat and now there’s a possibility that his wife Hillary may run for White House.

Things rapidly went downhill after Clinton, and there are some who believe that if he was around, Iraq may not have happened. Clinton was a smash hit in India as well, when he visited as a president, and that too, when his administration never gave as much respect to India as George W. Bush did….
